DJANGO'S GYPSIES
Some of you may recall us presenting Gypsy Swing with Igor
Oskolkov and Doug de Vries. This new line-up is promising to be just as
exciting. Mix of french jazz of 1940s with gypsy elements that Django
Reinhardt brought to the Hot Club of France as well as with Russian and
Eastern Europien influences this band sounds very engaging.
This particularly exciting collaboration will be between
the brilliant jazz violinist Igor Oskolkov, his Russian colleague pianist
Vitaly Barishnikov, and their Australian colleagues, the great jazz guitarist
Sam Lemann of Moovin' and Groovin' Orchestra fame, and the incredible
Melbourne bassist Jeremy Alsop.
Virtuoso jazz violinist Oskolkov and the brilliant pianist
Barishnikov both had distinguished music careers in Russia, where they
both led several of their own jazz ensembles prior to migrating to Australia
some years ago. Jeremy Alsop is one of Australia's most accomplished musicians
and widely recognized as one of the best bassists and bass guitarists
in Australia. He has consistently performed and recorded all over the
globe for the last 25 years. To date this year he's performed in Dusty
the Musical [Dusty Springfield]; produced Slava Grigorian's latest album;
and toured extensively with the exquisite harpist Mary Doumany. Last year
he performed and toured with Saturday Night Fever [over 200 performances
in Australia alone] and earlier was musical director for Christine Sullivan.
He was also once a member of Men at Work!
